Reba McEntire in South Pacific
Some enchanted evening, you just may see Reba McEntire waltz across a stage playing the part of Nellie Forbush in Roger’s and Hammerstein’s South Pacific. Reba joined the annual Hollywood Bowl in a three night rendition of the classic musical, and (not surprisingly) she received rave reviews. McEntire is a pro at marketing herself and mixing up her career to include various artistic mediums, so her fans should not be surprised at her latest combination of stage and fun.
McEntire has successfully appeared in many films, starred in her own television show (Reba), designed her own clothing line, and accepted roles on Broadway. Reba’s acting has always been positively reviewed amongst the press and critics, as she was recently compared to Lucille Ball for her many facial expression and ability to portray a physical actress on her TV show. This latest production of South Pacific proved to be no different. The audience laughed and cried with her as she contorted her body across the stage.
Although most country stars do not go on to become actors, the tradition has included a few notables such as the duos of Willie Nelson and Irving Berlin, Cole Porter and Gene Autry, and Irving Mills and Hank Williams. Reba tends to have fun with her roles, whatever they may be, and this latest role proved to be a challenge as it demanded that McEntire sing, act, dance, and play comedian all at the same time – though she made it all seem rather effortless. McEntire’s cheerful attitude and natural comedic talent have allowed her to come a long way in the world of both country music and theater, and her fans can expect this life light to continue entertaining until she can sing no more.
